Use liquid smoke.  Or if you must use a smoker retain some material from the
previous time. Then a mere spark from a lighter and a few seconds blowing on
it are usually sufficient. Then the smoker can be filled with whatever comes
to hand. usually I have old hessian potato sacks that are no longer
servicable, but I have used old dry rotten wood, grass, moss or even fibrous
pony turd.
