Right, but not all beekeepers do this. I have killed my share of bees, doing AFB abatement. But that's different. It's done swiftly and to protect the uninfected hives. 

I don't think bee colonies are conscious beings like mammals, but I don't *know* that. My impression is that they should be treated as humanely as possible. 

However, the effect of the mechanization of livestock production does as much or more harm to the people that get used to seeing other creatures as raw material.
