Another approach would be to simply take your
male dog (or a friend's male dog) to the apiary
with you on a regular basis.

The dog will do what dogs always do - mark the
territory.

Skunks and other critters will give the area
a wide berth.  Look for tracks around the edges
of the apiary, and you will see that the dog
can establish and maintain a nice varmint-free
DMZ around your hives.  If you must put the dog
on a leash and walk him around the perimeter to
get him to mark the edges, do so.

No muss, no fuss, and best of all, everyone
comes through the experience alive.
