Here (Netherlands) something called Fabi-spray is sold. It contains DEET as a repellant, some people use it and find it effective. 

 

In the old days people repelled bees by using a cloth drenched in a watery solution of phenol (aka carbolic acid aka hydroxybenzene).  Nasty.
