Well put Charlie!  I'd also be cautious about "authoritative words."  The
Coloss project is intentionally non authoritative, and openly subject to
discussion and revision.

My thanks to Jim for dredging up outdated info on my website--it has now
been corrected.  I suggest that one refer to

and for even more current info:

discussion on the shortcomings of measuring natural mite drop.

I now use the washer described at
http://scientificbeekeeping.com/an-improved-but-not-yet-perfect-varroa-mite-washer/
 exclusively, since it recovers nearly all mites in the first 5 seconds.
