Try Permadent.
 
You'll never give any kind of  wax foudation another thought -- for
all the reasons you mentioned.
 
I have a bunch of Duragilt combs.  I can recognise them because
those are the combs that are bowed out to one side with a shiny
patch where the uncapper pulled off the wax -- permanently (the bees
won't touch it).
 
Until Plastic sheets were proven to work, I thought Duragilt was
great, but you couldn't *give* it ot me now.
