NAPLES — Big brother is giving big honey a squeeze.

A new regulation banning the production, packaging or sale of contaminated
honey in Florida went into effect Tuesday. The corn syrup, sugar, water or
other additives or chemicals being put into honey by some large packagers —
many of them outside the U.S. — will no longer be allowed to corrupt bees’
hard work.

“It’s a good regulation as far as I’m concerned,” said Dennis Riggs, vice
president of the Beekeepers Association of Southwest Florida, the local
branch of the Florida State Beekeepers Association, which pushed for the
regulation.
