This could have to do with the fact that few beekeepers are called to do
removal of feral deadouts.  I've seen "ferals" with every sort of disease.
But I'm certainly not blaming the ferals--just no reason to think that they
would be immune to AFB.

I jinxed myself with the post about not seeing much AFB--yesterday I checked
a deadout hive that one of my sons had put on the truck--had to have an
impromptu AFB recognition session right there and then...

I'm not saying that AFB has disappeared--I just don't see as much of it as I
used to.
