Maybe it's just me, but saying "artificially" selected traits aren't
adaptive is itself a bit of a misnomer.  They might not help in survival in
the "wild" but dependence on humans can be adaptive.  Interdependence can
certainly be adaptive, are there not far more of many of these supposedly
"maladapted" domesticated animals than there likely would be in the wild
otherwise. Evolution might be random but it is directional towards traits
that increase survival/progeny.  If you want to make a distinction between
human action and other organisms we need to go back to the consciousness
debate.
