I suppose they could build some burr comb in that space as well as anywhere
else, so scrape it off. They will always leave themselves passage.
 
Remember, that Bee hives, etc., are for the convenience of the BeeKeeper. The
bees could care less and will do what they do. You can't control them, only
"attempt" to guide them in the direction that you favor. Maybe they will
follow your "attempt", maybe they won't.
 
As in all else, try it, if you don't like the idea for whatever reason,
that's okay too.
