> can anyone suggest a good book or two on honey bee biology

Dadant's "The Hive and the Honey Bee" has just about everything that you
could want to know about honey bee biology, plus a whole lot more. Make
sure you get the 2015 edition or at least the 1992 one -- it has been
updated many times over the past 150 years and when buying it used
online, often it isn't clear which edition is being sold to you.
