Ling honey does not granulate in the comb over winter; it is high in pollen.  At the time that Brother Adam wrote that I suspect that the winters were colder with long periods without cleansing flights.  I have only known one year in the last 30+ where the heather colonies were not the strongest in the following spring and would choose to winter all colonies on it if I could (long way to the nearest heather so not practical for me to take more than about a quarter of my colonies at most.  This year we did not go because of the poor season - you need very strong colonies for heather.
