Because they are not cheap (http://nodglobal.com/bee-cozies/ - $65 for 4 each fitting a two brood chamber hive). On the other hand, they are easy to put on and off quickly, do not require stapling, which makes hell of a noise inside, and are durable. This is my third winter with them and I don't see any wear & tear on them.
