I like your idea and do now remember that, in fact, I once did use it when I
found some thrown out.
As with nails in boards, I had to protect the side of the hives that the
skunks had got used to feeding at since they simply moved to side and
scratched longer - until bees crawled around side.
 
However as I write this I think one could help by restricting the entrance a
bit from either side so the bees would not get to the side of the hive as
fast and perhaps this would work better.  Skunks may not be all that patient
and might be more tempted to approach the smaller entrance and get
'discouraged'.
