I look on it as an optional extra to be used judiciously according to the  
circumstances.  I was glad of it yesterday when I went through a friend's  
hive as she found them too hot to handle and would then follow her up the  
garden.  I wore cyclist's trouser clips too, as bees tend to crawl  upwards.
 
Where I'm going tomorrow though,  I've never had a smoker with me, let  
alone used one, and I don't think they've ever stung me.
