You mention shrinkable plastic bands, for honey a great idea I believe.

Before they put plastic closures on Cottage Cheese it was common 
for people to open the lid and stick their finger in and taste the 
cheese, the more sanitary ones would open the lid and just smell.
Saw this happen many times as a store dairy clerk.
