" We tested five plant oils for antimicrobial activity and estimated the 
minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Thymol and Origanum were the most 
effective in controlling bacterial growth at the 0.01% concentration for the 
emulsified formulation and 0.02% for the slow-release. In vitro trials 
indicated that emulsified formulations were more effective at inhibiting 
bacterial growth than the slow-release.

"Either formulation of the essential oils added to the culture medium 
drastically reduced the growth of bacterial colonies compared with medium 
without oils.

"Our results strongly suggest that plant essential oils can be used to 
control American foulbrood disease in honey bee colonies even after 
resistance to OTC has developed
