varroa has wiped out virtually all feral colonies - I know of only one within 5 miles of home.

Of course, Peter lives in an insalubrious area (ie not in Dorset). Last year was aware of 13 feral colonies within 5 miles of home some of which have been there for many years, others may have died and been re-occupied soon afterwards. Some were in chimneys, most were in churches, a couple in trees and a couple have been above a kitchen ceiling for over 20 years.
