Edward Markus mentioned Tanglefoot.  It can be purchased at K-Mart or other
discount stores with garden centers.  Comes in a tub.  You apply and spread
it with a spoon, knife or other flat object.
 
Not too expensive.  Sounds like it might work against those beetles.
Depending on the hive stand.  Environmentally friendly, too.
