It's all about location. I lost one hive this winter due to 'unnecessary' starvation. A rather strong colony had decided to reside on the sunny side of a 3-deep hive. Not typical in my experience. Normally, we get several breaks in the cold weather allowing the bees to move to the honey but the cold spells last winter where rather long. This colony worked its way up and a little laterally under the inner cover but stayed with a small patch of brood and died. Again, this is not at all typical in my experience.

Going forward, if I see this positioning again, I'll shift the colony towards the center of the hive and make sure they have good stores overhead.
