I was waiting for Greg Hunt and his Purdue bees to be mentioned. Around here, we all know Greg and Krispn have been working on their "ankle-biters" for many years. I've had the privilege to hear Greg speak at bee meetings, and at our Spring bee schools on the subject. We've also get to see up close (through a microscope) the damage to mites that that have been bit and chewed. Mostly the pedipalps and several legs are chewed off.
I was able to get some good video of mites that have been chewed. To see, go here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChiA5-J-sPo
Jump to 18:39 to see how they line up the mites and inspect them under a microscope. Greg is a very approachable person and is always happy to answer questions on these bees.
