I am sure Randy will correct me, but I admit I was wrong on this one. Mites live a surprisingly long time. According to Penn State Publications

> Female mites produced in the summer live two to three months, and those produced in the fall live five to eight months. Without bees and brood, the mites can survive no more than a few days.

I suppose I just wished it were different
