Concerning comb honey production, Clayton writes, "What advantage does using
a slatted rack have verses not using one?"

In my opinion, a slatted rack really serves no useful purpose.  More
important, earlier this year a university-type did a good comparison test
and reported the results in The American Beekeeping Journal.  The conclusion
was that they made no difference.

That said, they certainly do no harm and you should not hesitate to use them
if you wish.
