It seems to me that many of the things we discuss are second hand.  What
varies is the quality of the source.  Personal communication from a person
unwilling to participate in the discussion can be readily dismissed
(although it may still have some value) whereas peer-reviewed publications
are significantly higher in quality (well, sometimes it is).  Part of our
discussion should always be to evaluate the sources.
