For whats its worth over the past 2 seasons I have had a number of colonies uncapping and in some cases re-capping purple eyed pupa as well chewing some of thier heads. 

Queens have been obtained from a number of "VSH" or survivor queen produces as well as some of my homemade mutts from these queens.

I typically here in central va usa dont see much uncapping until around july/august/sept and then it slowly stops before winter. In some cases this uncapping is enough to make some fellow beeks fuss about the "spotty" brood pattern...

But the point in my post is these colonies that exhibit this "trait" are uaually my largest and strongest overwintered colonies. But again this is not a scientific study just my honest observations...
