I have heard the starvation thing -starvation with stores and a good 
poulation-come up in conversations with other beeks. I speculated   that it 
was a genetic pre-disposition(perhaps "across" races )
I think also the following questions may be irrelevant but should be asked:

What color are the boxes? Dark colors will warm much much  more 
rapidly-especially up North with the low sun.
Are the hives in the shade?

I am not knowlegeable about beekeeping up North at all, but it just seems to 
me that this is a problem that would have been bumped into before
