Mine have occasionally succumbed to 'isolation starvation' in that they die 
 of starvation within inches of ample stores. Often this is because they 
are  rearing brood during winter and are reluctant to leave it to move onto 
other  stores during a cold snap.  Eventually Darwin will eliminate the 
strains  that do this.
