Perhaps they were used to clean the bore of muskets? Lead catches up quickly
and shot  would be at a premium. You would have to screw it out if it got
stuck. A marble of smaller dimension might clean wadding and other burnt
materials out of the smooth bore, Rags and solvents for the rifled bore.
