Dear Lactnuts,
Here in Peru we have a wonderful solution to the bottles and dolls problem.
The organization I work with has used the 1999 World Breastfeeding Week
poster doll as a basis for a doll that we use to teach children about
natural childbirth and lactation. The doll is handmade by low income women.
Her name is Mama Betsy. She has a pouch into which her baby can fit to
demonstrate pregnancy and natural childbirth. Then each of her nipples has a
snap to which the baby's mouth attaches, and her two arms encircle the baby
and snap at the hands. We explain to the children that she is giving her
baby two very important kinds of sustenance: her breast milk and her love.
We have a book that tells Mama Betsy's story and a coloring book as well. I
am translating them into English and hope to bring a supply with me when I
come to the states in July.
I really believe that this type of doll is a key tool in educating the next
generation of mothers. I would encourage you in your various countries to
come up with your own versions of this doll.

I have thought often of the first Christmas when a young teenage mother gave
birth in a filthy stable and didn't even have the comfort of a bed on which
to recline as she nursed her firstborn son. May the joy of this wondrous
season fill your hearts and renew your spirits.
Warmly,

Glenni Lorick, BSE, IBCLC
