Forcing fluids (i.e. overhydration) causes an increase in urinary
output, not milk production. the Dusdieker study (85) showed that
consuming more than 12 glasses of fluid/day (= 3L of fluid) can decrease
milk production by increasing the production of anti-diuretic hormone
(ADH). Without going into basic A&P about the kidneys, adrenal glands
and pituitary function, let me just say briefly (with apologies to those
who know this already) that the hypothalmus (posterior pituitary- PP)
regulates ADH secretion and ADH regulates water concentration of bodily
fluids. ADH produces an effect of decreased urine production and can
actually cause more fluids to be retained. And think about what other
hormones do the PP produce? Oxytocin....
