I don't know if anyone is familiar with this environmental group:
http://www.mothers.org/
The group's mission: "Mothers & Others, a national nonprofit education
organization, works to promote consumer choices which are safe and
ecologically sustainable for this generation and the next. By providing
strategies that can reduce individual and community consumption of natural
resources, and by mobilizing consumers to seek sustainable choices, we aim
to effect lasting protection of public health and the environment." It seems
like BF would fit well into the group's agenda, doesn't it? Unfortunately,
like many environmental groups, it has taken a neutral to anti-breastfeeding
position WRT infant feeding. I find this so disappointing as a
[soon-to-be-former] supporter. To name just one example, their take on
asthma makes no mention of BF:
http://www.mothers.org/greenguide/features.html
I have written to them in the past about this topic, and they haven't even
dignified my view with a form-letter "thanks for writing" response. I've
recommended adding a book about BF to their large selection of recommended
books -- again, no response. Apparently one person is not worth listening
to. :-/
I hope that some of you here will join me in encouraging them to discuss
breastfeeding -- and beyond the knee-jerk "there are toxins in breastmilk"
stance many environmental groups have taken. Maybe we can redirect some of
the energy we've spent writing to one another about initials. :-) The email
address is:
