REVIEWS:

"The interpretation of Beethoven's "Leonore" Overture No. 3 is truly
great: rhythmically alert, warmly expressive, again exciting, especially
in the coda. Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony, too, is particularly fine,
spirited in the Allegro movements, elegant in the Andante, with good
stirring sound. Monteux occasionally indulges in ritards common at
the time but unfashionable today. (Too bad for today.)

...there is much pleasure to be gained from this set, which documents
the work of a master operating at a consistently high level in
   performances never intended for posterity.

Pierre Monteux was one of the great conductors of the century, as
   these CDs (mostly) show."

The New York Times: Feb. 8, 1998: John Canarina

"Monteux's unrivaled authority with the music of Berlioz jis shown
   to best advantage...

...Monteux drives his players to their absolute limit, with admirable
   results.

   ...a riveting Brahms Tragic overture...

Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice is one of the finest on record...

This is an important release which no admirer of Pierre Monteux will
   want to miss."

ARSC Journal: Vol. 29, No. 1, Spring 1998: Gary A. Gallo

"Despite some blemishes, this is a major release that is valuable
for its many fine performances and for adding considerably to what
   is known Pierre Monteux.

Of [great] importance [is] the historical significance and musical
worth of this remarkable set. Over and beyond clarifying-far better
than does Monteux's "official" discography-key aspects of his repertory,
it reveals him as a conductor at once passionate, disciplined, and
tasteful; one who was sometimes more vibrant than the Monteux captured
in the studio and yet, like that studio conductor, a cultivated
musician possessing an extraordinary ear for balance, a keen sense
of style and a sure grasp of shape and line."

ICRC: Summer, 1998: Mortimer H. Frank
