In earlier posts, I've enthused about the 18th Century Symphony series on
Naxos. The latest in the series to come my way contains four symphonies by
Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739-1813) played by the Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia
conducted by Uwe Grodd (8.554341; 56:04). On a first hearing, the music
sounds like the Haydn of, say, the Maria Theresa symphony, and has much
of its buoyant exuberance. There are some unusual touches here and there,
and the playing is of a high standard. I found this disc hugely enjoyable
and if the music of this period appeals, it will provide a lot of pleasure.
It's also labelled Volume 1 and with 80-odd symphonies to choose from, the
chances are very good that Volume 2 - when it appears - will be its equal.
