Dave, may I suggest as a cheap and fulfilling side light to a bunch of
Ravel listening the recent Naxos release of solo piano music by short-lived
American composer Charles Griffes, played by Michael Lewin? I wouldn't call
Griffes a Ravel clone at all, but there's some strong affinities there and
this stuff makes a very nice followup to a session of Ravelling.
As for Ravel himself, I myself have been wondering if there's a
recommendable recording that features the violin sonatas along with the Duo
for violin and cello. These are among the Ravel pieces I still have never
heard. Also, did Michael Gielen's Arte Nova disc of Daphnis and Chloe ever
come out? I saw ads for it ages ago, but then nothing.
