Rob,

As a WIC Lactation Specialist and a LLLL, I have been told by both
organizations than I can not contrdict a doctor. Since I am not an
IBCLC, I have no professional standing.

However, in cases like the one I saw this weekend (Mom having
excrutiating pain, with cracked nipples....Dr. told her he had never in
14 yrs of practice heard of anyone having Thrush or Yeast on nipples) I
provide the mother with written documentation....the original studies
when I have them...any paper written by a Dr.if studies are not
available.... and suggest she :
         1) share these with her physician.
          2) get a second opinion

I remind these women that while I have no medical degree, and can not
diagnose their problem/condition, that many doctors choose others areas
of study for continuing education, and may NOT know much about
breastfeeding. I also encourage moms to tell their doctors they want to
breastfeed, it is important to them and ask their doctor if he/she is
comfortable in supporting her in this endeavor, or would prefer to
recommend someone else.

I am fortunate to have nearby a VERY GOOD doctor who has established a
breastfeeding consult service, so when things are really bad, I can
suggest they contact this Dr. immediately for a secon opinion.

Sorry about the misspellings, run-ons...2 yr old daughter is "doing" my
hair!
