Have you come across the music of Giya Kancheli? To me, he's the surprise
omission from this thread.  He isn't exactly a "young composer", as he has
produced seven symphonies and several other major works, all real (late-)
20th century music written by a human being for other human beings.  It
won't be to everyone's taste - for the most part, it's slow and quiet, but
there are occasional violent outbursts.  There are similarities in sound
to the music of Vasks, but to me Kancheli conveys stronger emotions.
