Lori...
First of all, my name is Ann McAdoo and I am an RN and the breastfeeding
specialist at my home care agency, hope to take IBCLC next year! Here in
CT the HMO's are really pretty good about authorizing LC visits. The
only problem is that the mom's don't know they get that service unless
they have really read up on their maternity policy. When the MCH nurse
goes out to the home and does the first visit pp she evaluates the need
for a second visit and (hopefully) notifies me if there is a
breastfeeding issue, then I will contact her. Most HMO's will give pp
mom's a home visit in the first week home. My dream is to contact all
breastfeeding mom's we get through the agency in the second week home and
offer them assisstance at that point. Most moms don't know what an LC is
or that we exist so they don't know they might need one. If I had a
nickle for everytime I hear that breastfeeding is supposed to hurt I
would be rich! I am in the processof developing a lactation program for
the agency and I am getting a lot of support from the other nurses, but
the powers that be are asking me what an LC is.
educate...educate...educate.
