Ohio, with Cincinnati in the south and from Columbus northward to Lake
Erie, is a classical-music goldmine.  I don't know why this should be.
Perhaps it's the presence of all those small liberal arts colleges as
well as of some of the state schools.  In northern Ohio alone, one finds
Oberlin, Baldwin-Wallace, Kent State, Cleveland Institute of Music, the
Cleveland Music Settlement, Wooster, and many others.  There are even
*commercial* classical-music stations that program works other than the
trivial.  The number of community orchestras is astonishing.  I know
Cleveland best, but I've found good groups in places like Toledo and
Youngstown.  The place seems, compared to New Orleans (where I now live),
classical-music mad.  In New Orleans, classical music hangs on by its
fingernails.
