This is the same story I was told.  Alex North was hired to write the
music for the film, but saw his score scuttled when Kubrick became enamored
of the music (Ligeti's and others) he had heard over and over again on the
temp tracks during the editing process.  IMO too much blather has been
written about Kubrick's "conscious choices" in his films, when most of
the time the guy never could make up his mind, harboring an "idee fixe"
for years and then suddenly changing his mind completely on a momentary
caprice.  His last effort must be seen at best as a work in progress.
