Recently I have had the opportunity to look at a number of 18th century
Virginia/ Maryland pig iron. All of these were marked with the furnace name
and, presumably, the date of manufacture. When and where did this practice
start? Is it a US phenomena? Jeremy Hodgkinson, Wealden Iron Research Group,
has told me that none of the pig iron from the Weald was marked.
