The problem of evaluating farmstead sites was addressed by George Miller
and Terry Klein at the most recent meeting of the Council for Northeast
Historical Archaeology. They prepared a tabular checklist for evaluation
that's pretty good. It creates a point system for evaluation.

Bill Liebeknecht, who recommended Miller and Klein, has done some work
himself. His colleague Ian Burrow, at Hunter, published an article in the
Archeological Society of New Jersey journal that responded to the same
issue.
