I think it's familiarity. Most British people know automatically (or at
least they did) that when you refer to "Nelson" you mean the Admiral. I
would be interested to know what others would make of Nelson's final words,
though: "Kiss me, Hardy" would have to become "Kiss me, Captain Hardy" or
there might be a whole new complexion put upon the relationship between
Stan and Ollie.
