I know exactly what you mean!!!  It just caught me off my feet (was
surprised more than anything) and didnt know if my response was adequate (I
didnt want to sound to soft infront of the other moms, who instantly stared
at me to see what was I going to respond...while at the same time I didnt
want to mother to loose her confidence in me).

Anyway,,,I doubt that this mother hates breastfeeding...I just think that
the vision of a nursing toddler in our society is so "disgusting" to some
people...to me, this is what she let me understand.

Its just the shock (to me) of this mother, who is doing so well, that has
enjoyed not only the breastfeeding prenatal class (which is not easy for
them to come, since the hospital I work with gives me a terrible date and
hour for this), but also the support group...who has never given the baby
formula, and is doing so well to be thinking so early about weaning.  And
believe me...I see premature weaning all the time...the concept here that a
baby will not get enough if he is not supplemented is encouraged here, even
by health professionals...and our breastfeeding percentages beyond 3 weeks
is more or less than 4%.  This is why the situation with this mother
saddened me.
