Last week I posted a question asking if anyone knew the couplings for
this new CD release. Happily, I can now answer my own question as I picked
up a copy on Sunday! Yes, BMG has put the couplings on that I had dreamt
about - the Bartok "Miraculous Mandarin" and Hindemith "Noblissima Visione"
suites, and I can report that they are as magnificent as I remember. The
power and virtuosity of the CSO are truly jaw-dropping, considering that in
the '60's none of these works were in the standard repertory (indeed they,
especially the Varese, still aren't, really). The Varese is especially
noteworthy in this way. The CSO toss off this fearsomely difficult
composition with the aplomb of a C major scale. Martinon provides intense,
exciting interpretations that I have never heard bettered. He is also
keenly aware of the quieter, more reflective passages in the Hindemith and
the orchestra supports him beautifully. I highly recommend this CD for
anyone who is interested in these composers, compositions, or for anyone
wanting to broaden their interest in 20th Century music. YOU WON'T BE
DISAPPOINTED!
