I have mixed feelings about the significance of liner notes.  I certainly
expect decent notes and do read them once in a while.  Although the quality
varies a lot, the notes can be particularly insightful concerning obscure
composers/works.

However, I would never forgo the purchase of a disc I wanted because of
poor liner notes.  It might have something to do with a person's relative
enjoyment of reading vs.  listening to music.  I heavily favor the latter,
and that preference dictates my purchasing pattern.  I have a great many
documents to read and analyze at work; by the time I get home, more reading
is not high on my agenda.
