Dear Friends:
Diane's posts about positioning perfection are right on! I have
worked with a number of women with large, soft pendulous breasts. They have
come to me for pain or nipple damage or baby gaining slowly. Their instincts
after birth were to use a scissors hold and have the baby lying supine low
down in their laps. The hospital staff said that was wrong, and got them to
use a C-hold, which resulted in a crinkled breast and a nipple rubbing on the
roof of the baby's mouth.
Breastfeeding cross-legged on the floor with Baby in her lap as she
uses a scissors hold can be perfect for some people.
Warmly, Nikki Lee (whose last baby insisted on lying flat on her back
and turning her head to latch-on, despite my desperate attempts to wedge her
onto her side. Didn't she read the book? )
