Our noble Dave (may his cup be forever full, unless he happens to be a
teetotaller) customarily gives us the licence to stray a bit beyond the
boundaries of what is generally considered "classical" music because (if I
understand the reasons correctly) (1) it is impossible to draw very rigid
lines demarcating genres of music anyway, (2) relating "classical" music in
the narrow sense to other kinds of music often sheds light on the nature of
both classical and non-classical music, and (3) some folks in fact consider
a person like Ellington to be a very classical (and classy) composer.

How would you categorize Strauss waltzes? Most people think of them as
"classical," but they are certainly no more classical than an Ellington
blues.
