Actually, just wanted to chime in and echo what great pieces these are -
and I have this same recording. The 2nd sonata is my favorite, I think.

Two of my favorite Hindemith pieces are the flute sonata and the bassoon
sonata.  Both are wonderful.  Hindemith wrote at least one sonata for most
instruments in the orchestra and all the ones I've heard are great.  Also,
you might want to check out the Wind Quintet - excellent piece.  I've
played both this and the flute sonata and the more you get to know them
the better the music gets.

(Incidentally, I have a recording with the quintet, the flute and bassoon
sonatas, and you get the sonatas for horn and English horn as well...  It's
Sony SK 64400 and called Hindemith Kleine KammerMusik)
