In my continued sideways search for neglected late 19th/early-mid 20th
century musical ecstacy I have happened upon a CD of harp concerti by
Handel, Mozart, Eichner, and Boieldieu; and more interestingly,
Villa-Lobos, Tedesco, and Rodrigo.

I usually find the modern Latins tiresome, (wrist-to-elbow length tone
clusters in mixed meter with maracas over the top), but the harp concerti
are quite endearing. I have recommended the Rodrigo previously on MCML,
but now I would include all of the above.

Wonderfully delicate orchestrations, some dissonance but innate diatonic
nature of the harp is always allowed to shine through. Those looking to
fill in the corners of their collection will find some fine music.

The CD is entitled: Favorite Harp Concertos on Phillips DUO 289 462 179-2
