Marie posted a few days ago about receiving a book that was VERY
disappointing. Well yesterday I received a book I had ordered from Mosby
and I just want to tell all thousands of you that I was DAZZLED !

Breastfeeding the Newborn: Clinical Strategies for Nurses by Marie
Biancuzzo. 1999. Mosby, 11830 Westline Ind. Dr., St. Louis MO 63146-3318
<$30

Marie is RN, MS, IBCLC and it shows! I've only had a chance to leaf
through the book, but I am so impressed. I think it will be an extremely
valuable tool to getting info to maternal/child health supervisors to help
their hoapitals become "baby friendly." There are sample protocols for cup
feeding, charts about drugs, infections (types of infections and BF safety
rec for US), bilirubin and on and on. They make info quick and easy for
busy staff to find and backed up with good ref. Just invaluable.

It is written in nurse-eze. Pictures are excellent. Extensive list of
resources, parent ed info (pamphlets and videos).

Well I'll stop now lest you think I AM the commercial. But I'd work on
getting one for my least favorite breastfeeding environment if I were you!
I've seen Marie on Lactnet. I'd say this book qualifies her to be a
Lactnut! I've never met Marie, but look forward to conratulating her on
this useful book. Oh I just read the blurb on the back of the book. She
was BF coord. at U of Rochester Med Ctr, VP of US Baby Friendly. I guess
that explains a lot of her expertise!!!!!

We are considering it as a prize for our World BF Week contest. There are
13 hospitals in our area. They are asked to do a lobby display for World
BF Month (yeah, we know). Last year we gave each hospital that
participated a Hale. The winning hospital got a pizza party for a
maternal/child staff meeting. 6 hospitals participated and it was SO
successful. All that info out for the world to see in the hospital lobby
and we didn't do a lick of the work. I felt just like Tom Sawyer when he
got the other guy to paint the fence.

Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
